Welcome!

Amidst the vines of the valley floor, a unique tradition continues. In the historic Rutherford schoolhouse, new generations of children learn through play, and their parents make powerful connections – working collaboratively to build lasting bonds for both parent and child.

The St. Helena Cooperative Nursery School reflects one of the best parts of our community. The Co-op emphasizes the development of the whole child through social interaction, multi-sensory activities, and active parent involvement.

In an age when kids are pushed to read and write before they are developmentally ready, Co-op children learn through experience. Co-op children understand math not by rote memorization, but by adding the number of pounds of rice they have collected for the local food pantry. On any given morning, kids gather around the circle rug for story, tunnel through the sand pile, or make a first friend. They feed birds in winter, and pump water by hand, ever alert to the splendor – and fragility – of the environment around them.

The parents of the Co-op have maintained the Rutherford schoolhouse since 1966. Many years of care from generations of families have preserved this historic building as a landmark of the Napa Valley.

We balance this responsibility to the past with the necessity of updating our school facilities for the future. This year we are asking you to raise your paddles to fund our new carpentry shed. This structure will provide a permanent home for tools and woodworking supplies, allowing our young builders to hone their skills every day. If you have ever seen the satisfaction that a young child gets from successfully driving a nail through a piece of wood, then you know what a valuable addition this carpentry shed will be to the Co-op.

Thank you for joining us in our annual quest to keep the Co-op an educational gem, an integral part of our community and an ecological inspiration for generations to come.
